The Zoological Park Organization came into existence by the Royal decree on February 15,1954. The first zoo is Dusit Zoo which is the predecessor of the Zoological Park Organization under the Royal patronage of H.M. the King. This zoo was established in 1938 by the Municipality of Bangkok. Subsequently, the Minister of Interior, Gen, Banyat Thephasadin Na Ayuthya proposed to the government in 1953 that an organization should be established to administer and to direct the zoo efficiently due to the Municipalily of Bangkok did not have enough budget, thus hinder the future development of the zoo in Thailand.

Nowadays the Zoological Park Organization comprises 3 departments namely the Administrative and Supply Department, Development and Planning Department, the Technical Department and 5 zoos namely:

Dusit Zoo, 47.2 acres

This was a part of the Royal Dusit Garden Palace with the local name of "KHAO DIN WANA" which was set up by King Rama V as his private botanical garden. In 1938, the government of Field Marshal P. Pibunsongkram, the Prime Minister of Thailand at the time asked the king for the land to set up the zoo for the public. the King Rama Vlll had granted the land. Then the government asked the Bangkok Municipality to establish the zoo in March 1938. This is the first public zoo, located near the National Assembly. This popular zoological garden combines the educational and recreational with water ways flowing from an ornamental lake.

Locally known as Khao Din (Mole hill) Zoo, the zoo houses some 1,600 Asian and African mammals, reptiles and birds in landscaped gardens that feature a great many native plants, flowers and trees. Rare and endangered species displayed at the zoo include the African elephant, jagaur, white flamingo, ostrich and zebra.

Children's playgrounds add to the zoo's enduring popularity.

The Dusit Museum houses an ecolgical exhibition, contains conference rooms fully equipped with audio - visual equipment, and a comprehensive reference library for naturalists of every persuasion.

The concepts of the zoo are

a) Developing this zoo as the beautiful city zoo for the publics

d) Developing the car park area separate from the exhibit area

Animal Exhibit Development is the main item of this zoo because this zoo is the first one, most of the exhibits are old style, such as Elephant House Development, Primate House and Nocturnal House.

Much more than these, this zoo tries to develop abut Animal Collection Plan, Graphic zoo Education, zoo guide and Zoo school, good training personnel.

Because this is the very old city zoo, the problem is the car park area which the organization is willing to set this area by moving the animal keepers living area out of the zoo and find the new area for them.

Chiang Mai Zoo

This 212 - acre zoo in Chiang Mai, some 700 kilometres north of bangkok, occupies the lower slopes of Doi Suthep, the forested mountain overlooking the provincial capital, and is perhaps the most attractively landscaped of all Thai zoos. The forest setting enhances animal enclosures which are generally  spacious, conveniently accessible and environmentally natural.

Popular mammals include the African cheetah and giraffe, the Asian rhinocerous, tiger and elephant.

Several bird species can be viewed in a massive walk-through hillside aviary sufficiently spacious for inhabitants to freely fly and mate. Part of the zoological gardens are reserved for breeding, especially for endangered species such as certain species of antelope, and dwarf donkeys.
