BLOOD PARAMETERS FROM TWO DUGONGS KEPT IN JAYA ANCOL OCEANARIUM

Teuku Sahir Syah

Jaya Ancol Oceanarium is the only Oceanarium in Indonesia that has facilities for marine mammals. These include Dolphins (Tursiop aduncas), California Sea lions (Zalophus californianus), Fresh water Dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) and Dugong (Dugong dugon). We have kept Dugong (Dugong dugon) since 1984. At present we have two dugongs in our collection.

Around Indonesia Dugongs are found in Bangka Island Sea, Sunda Straits, Lombok Straits, Flores Sea, Palu Sea, South Celebes Sea, North Celebes Sea, Amon Sea and Arapura sea.

It would be very useful to have normal hematological values for Dugong to help in the diagnosis of disease. We have taken blood from our dugongs successfully from the right and left flippers. On the two occasions we have collected blood, we have had two different parameters.

It required two persons to hold down the animal’s body and one more to stabilize the flipper from which the blood was to be collected. We found that the best location for blood collection was from the internal surface of the forelimb flipper.

We used 18G needles for blood collection and alcohol to disinfect the site prior to inserting the needle.

The blood parameters from the two different dugongs are presented in table 1 and 2.
