18th SEAZA Annual Conference

2008 CBSG, WAZA & IZE Annual Conferences

Adelaide, Australia, was a busy place 16-23 October 2008, hosting the annual conferences for the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG), the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the International Zoo Educators Association (IZE). Chris West of Zoos South Australia did an excellent job of organizing the events which included visits to local Adelaide and Monarto Zoos. SEAZA was present at these events with representatives from many of our member institutions. It included a number of productive workshop sessions updating us on the efforts of our global conservation partners.

Our Members in Action

On 14 August 2008, SEAZA President and Taman Safari Indonesia Director Jansen Manansang was presented with the Tanda Kehormatan Bintang Jasa Utama medal for Meritorious Service. In a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono awarded Pak Jansen in recognition of his years of dedication to animal conservation.

On 23 February 2008, SEAZA member Taman Safari Indonesia in Cisarua played host to Terri Irwin along with her children, Bindi and Robert, from Australia Zoo. SEAZA President and Taman Safari Indonesia Director Drs. Jansen Manansang is seen here introducing his guests to one of the park's orangutan residents.

From 18-19 February 2008, Taman Safari Indonesia played host to CBSG Headquarters Senior Program Manager Dr. Kathy Traylor-Holzer. During these two days, Dr. Traylor-Holzer facilitated a workshop co-sponsored by CBSG Indonesia covering a broad range of topics including principles of ex-situ population management, studbook maintenance and facilitation skills training. Organizations in attendance included the Indonesian Zoo Association (PKBSI), SEAZA and CBSG Japan. CBSG Indonesia convenor Drs. Jansen Manansang is seen here with Dr. Traylor-Holzer.
